Rhizomatous Begonias

The Brad Thompson rhizomatous series are plants that were grouped together because of similar parentage or characteristics.

The 'Snake' series got it's start because the first one named had coloring that reminded him of the patterns on a snake. From there it just expanded as different ones reminded him of different snakes such as Begonia 'Spitting Cobra' that had fan leaves with a pattern that reminded me of the spread hood of a cobra, etc. Many people, that don't like snakes, do object to growing plants with snake names, but these begonias are spectacular plants.

Unless noted otherwise, there is a maximum limit of 3 for each kind of plant, but order as many different varieties as you wish. We grow many different plants, but we don't grow a lot of any one kind.

Large black double spiral deeply cleft fan leaves on a compact growing plant. Leaves are pure velvety black in all light conditions. Flowers are light pink and plentiful and are carried on tall stems. Leaves can reach dinner plate size and are very upright on a mature plant. One of the 'Snake' series. (Thompson)

Large growing rhizomatous. Upright large, cupped, double spiraled deeply lobed leaves, green with black markings. White flowers on tall spikes in spring. Grows very bushy and large. One of the 'Snake' series. (Thompson)

Low growing rhizomatous. Has double spiral dark green leaves with coppery brown markings that are deeply cleft. Pink flowers held high above foliage in spring. Can be large leaved but grows compactly. Part of the 'Snake' series. One of the rarest and hard to find of the series, limited supply. (Thompson)

Medium growing rhizomatous. Large leaved double spiral medium green leaves with black markings between leave veins. Leaves are deeply cleft. One of the 'Snake' series, not widely circulated yet. Flowers are light pink and held on tall stalks in large clusters. Blooms in late winter and spring. Very full growing and easy to grow, makes an impressive specimen plant. (Thompson)

Large growing rhizomatous. Large cupped, star shaped dark green leaves with a spiral and dark brown to black streaked markings. Lightly hairy and leaves are on long sturdy stems covered with red hair. Grows to be a large plant quickly and always attractive. Good specimen plant. Medium growing rhizomatous. Medium star leaves on sturdy petioles. Leaves are nearly black stars with green markings on the star points. Easy to grow. Dark pink flowers on tall stalks in late winter and spring. Although not spiraled like the others in the 'Snake' series, still very showy and makes a great specimen. (Thompson)
