Family: Solanaceae

Native to Australia and New Zealand, the common name refers to the leaf shape which resembles a kangaroo's footprint. Kangaroo apple is a beautiful soft-wooded evergreen shrub with ornate deep purple flowers, 2 inches wide, blooming summer through fall. It is fast growing to 6 feet tall in rich soil, but relatively short-lived. For the home gardener, it is an ideal quick growing screen plant while slower shrubs are being established. The Kangaroo apple is subtropical and can be grown in areas where frost is minimal. Grow as an annual elsewhere. Sun to part shade.

Fruit is small, orange, egg-shaped. Although the ripe fruit was eaten raw or cooked by native peoples, the leaves and green unripe berries will burn the mouth and are best considered to be poisonous.
