Green Shield, Spotted Strobilanthes
Strobilanthes maculata

Quantity in Basket: None

Family: Acanthaceae

The lush olive green leaves on this tropical perennial are decorated with silvery plumes on either side of the midrib, as if applied with a paintbrush. This leaf pattern can become more pronounced when grown in deeper shade. The 4 inch long leaves are opposite, lanceolate, and serrated and the small tubular flowers are purple fading to almost white at the base. Grows fast up to 4 feet high. To maintain a more compact form, pinch stems to encourage branching. Likes warm, humid conditions and is frost-tender. Very dry air can cause browning of the leaf edges. Give it shade, rich soil, regular watering and fertilizer, with reduced water in winter. Can be grown as a house or conservatory plant. This plant is often sold as Strobilanthes lactata. Native to India's Himalayas. USDA zones 9-11.
