Begonia 'Hallows' Eve'
Begonia Hallows' Eve

Shallow lobed star leaf with serrated, sparsely hairy edge. Surface of leaf is also sparsely hairy. At maturity leaves have a tendency to umbrella with the leaf tips curving down making the leaf roughly an umbrella shape. Like Begonia 'Halloween Treat', Begonia 'Hallows' Eve' spends part of the year putting out red and dark brown leaves with dark black markings but near Halloween it turns black. The prominent red eye is striking and the red radiates out into the veins. This plant differs from Begonia 'Halloween Treat' in that it puts out much larger leaves held upright on sturdy petioles. The larger leaves with the eyes and color make for an awesome striking plant that can't be overlooked. Since the leaves are larger, it compensates by being less full growing. But, it would actually be less showy if it grew any fuller because many of its eyes would be hidden. Makes a great, stately if spooky specimen. The odd shade of dark hot pink flowers on tall petioles are a beautiful bonus and contrast to the dark leaves in spring. Although easy to grow, it may take some time to get going to full size, but enjoyable and lovely at any size. (Thompson)
