Family: Euphorbiaceae
A small tropical tree growing quickly to 15 feet high with large, palmate lobed leaves. Easy to care for in protected sunny places for a striking tropical look. Tolerates some dryness. Deciduous in winter, it may die to the ground in colder areas but quickly re-sprouts with warmer weather. Interesting aspect: The tree loudly hums as the insignificant flowers open briefly in the early morning, and swarms of honey bees devour its nectar. In an hour, or so, they're gone. Sometimes sold as Manihot carthaginensis. Native to Brazil and Argentina and naturalized in some areas of the south east US. Hardy to USDA Zone 8.
