Family: Melastomataceae
An invalid horticultural name for a very large-leafed Tibouchina, which is newly popular in Florida. The name would infer large flowers, but in fact they are relatively small. It may be a form of Tibouchina heteromalla. Huge furry ovate leaves frame a spectacular display of 1.5 inch dark purple flowers produced on large panicles in late summer, into fall. Will grow 5-6 ft tall in partial shade. Zones 10 - 11. We had previously listed Tibouchina grandiflora as a synonym for Melastoma polyanthemum.
