Low growing compact rhizomatous species. Leaves are small, very fleshy with waxy round leaves that are bronze with light green markings. Flowers are dark pink. Probably the parent of Begonia 'Erythrophylla' (the beefsteak begonia) that has been popular since the 1850's. The species is much more colorful, but a little harder to grow.
