Begonia 'Alice's White Rabbit'

Begonia Alice's White Rabbit

$12.95

The name is a little playoff of unrelated Begonia 'Looking Glass', which is also silver. While at first glance young plants of the two may look alike, they do not stay that way. 'Alice's White Rabbit' is more upright, rambling, and branching and blooms in late summer, unlike 'Looking Glass' which seldom blooms. As a medium-leaved Superba cane, it makes a lovely large hanging basket or specimen. It also has one other great trait, unlike most silver leaved canes, it's not mildew prone. It was named a few years ago, but was in such demand that we never had enough to list. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia Carol Knight

$12.95

Leaves are lobed with lazy double spirals and a lightly hairy surface. As with all rhizomatous, the coloration can be variable with the light conditions. Begonia 'Carol Knight' may vary from its tawny brown color, especially in good light where its new leaves are red that gradually fade to an unusual aqua marine green. In all its color changes it maintains its most prominent features which are its prominent red veins, glowing center, and a waxy layer to mature leaves. The waxy layer makes taking photos that do it justice much harder. Leaves are also sparsely hairy with a serrated hairy edge. Hot pink flowers in spring. Very full growing, vigorous and easy to grow. Visitors who see it in person always are drawn to it. Very novel and a great begonia to collect. (Thompson)

90283

$9.95

This popular favorite is easy to grow and blooms continuously under various light conditions. The leaves are nearly black and the plant is constantly covered with a cloud of pink flowers. In low light the leaves are blacker with fewer flowers, in some sun or high light the leaves are more bronze but nearly obscured by the amount of flowers. Commonly used in baskets, pots or can even be used in the landscape in frost free areas. (Kartuz)

90615

Begonia 'Copper King'

Begonia Copper King

$12.95

Small rhizomatous begonia. The name is a bit of a misnomer in that it really should be Copper Kid or something with a small name, but just didn't seem to fit. The picture doesn't do justice to the strong overall copper color of the leaf. Younger leaves have somewhat shallow lobes but mature leaves are more star shaped. The copper coloring is most vivid in the center and along the central veins and along the sparsely hairy edge. A smaller begonia but still vigorous and easy to grow with plenty of white to light pink flowers in spring. A good candidate for a windowsill, small basket, or just as a potted plant. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

90614

Begonia 'Dangling Pearls'

Begonia Dangling Pearls

$12.95

While this begonia is nearly the first begonia named by Brad Thompson, it hasn't been previously listed online. It's unique because there are few small growing white canes with nearly black leaves and white flowers. It is also one of the few white flowered canes which doesn't seem to turn pink when given stronger light. Stays small and compact with very little effort and makes a nice hanging basket that is nearly everblooming. Because of its dark leaves, it makes a splendid contrast when grown alongside pink and red flowered canes. Original plant has been going strong since the early 90's, so it should be a success for most begonia fanciers. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

90601

Begonia 'Firewater'

Begonia Firewater

$12.95

This is one of those begonias that isn't quite a mini rhizomatous but isn't a medium either, so it falls in-between. Named 'Firewater' because the leaves are red and green, which brings to mind fire and water. The small lobed leaves also have a thin layer of silver overlay, which the photo fails to adequately show. Coloring stays fairly consistent all year regardless of light conditions. Though small, it is easy to grow and quickly fills the pot with narrow rhizomes. This multi-purpose begonia is very versatile and fast growing. This is great begonia to have, especially if you want smaller growing ones. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia valida

Begonia valida

$9.95

Large growing large leaved thick-stemmed begonia. For those unfamiliar with the term, thick-stemmed begonias are basically shrubs with very large diameter stems. Most have a tendency to have leaves mainly at the tops with the bare stems showing but Begonia valida can be trained to be shorter and full or tall and bare depending on your preference. Leaves are almost round with slight lobes. In good light light leaves are dark green with some texture but are large and flat in low light. Blooms in late spring to early summer with profuse upright clusters of white flowers. Has the unique habit of putting out variegated leaves at various times of the year, most often in summer or during blooming period. The variegated leaves eventually turn green though hybrids of Begonia valida often retain variegation such as Begonia 'Gideon'. A great plant for collectors or for growers that like large plants. Very easy to grow. Rarely offered.

90516

Begonia 'Vista Lady'

Begonia Vista Lady

$12.95

This is a Begonia luxurians hybrid with much the same habit and size but with only a partially compound leaf at maturity. Since our stock plant is 5 feet tall after pruning and in an 8 inch pot you can assume that this plant can get enormous. Plain green large fingered leaves that may become partially parted or compound on one side. No matter what stage the leaves are in the plant is full, large and stately in the spirit of Begonia 'Vista Quest', which is a sibling. It has both larger clusters and larger white flowers than its parent. Easier to get established than Begonia luxurians which can be temperamental to grow. (Thompson)

Begonia 'Wild Pony'

Begonia Wild Pony

$12.95

This medium to large leaved rhizomatous begonia has been in circulation for at least 40 years. It was originally a seedling just labeled Bokit x carrieae created by Leslie Woodriff but was later named and circulated under the name 'Wild Pony' by Brad Thompson. It is somewhat wild and sprawling and takes a little work to make a nicely shaped plant. But it's a wonderful plant for hybridizing, as it seems to pass on it's vigor, spirals, and coloring, which is green with dark markings along the veins. Easy to grow and a survivor, as its longevity in circulation would imply. New Kartuz introduction for 2017. (Woodriff)

90344

Pilea pubescens 'Silver Cloud'

Silver Cloud Pilea, Silver Panamiga

Pilea pubescens Silver Cloud

$9.95

Uncommon house plant with striking silvery leaves, ruffled and serrated, with pinkish color on the undersides. It's an upright compact plant to 10 inches high with inconspicuous flowers. Although it likes terrarium conditions, it might be a bit large for such usage. Ideal in a mixed planting of house plants, such as with silvery or spotted begonias, thus creating a nice contrast. Also, use it in its own hanging basket. Indoors give it bright conditions and humidity and let the soil dry slightly between watering. It does not like waterlogged soil, so do not use too large a pot, smaller is better. Needs part to full shade outdoors in mild climates. Minimum temperature should be 50F, with the ideal range from 65F to 85F. Since cuttings root easily, it's a good idea to periodically replace old plants. Cold air, especially in winter, may cause some leaf drop. Do a bit of judicious pruning in spring to induce new growth. Native to South America. USDA zones 10 - 11. Urticaceae
