Begonia 'Alice's White Rabbit'

Begonia Alice's White Rabbit

$11.95

NEW! - The name is a little playoff of unrelated Begonia 'Looking Glass', which is also silver. While at first glance young plants of the two may look alike, they do not stay that way. 'Alice's White Rabbit' is more upright, rambling, and branching and blooms in late summer, unlike 'Looking Glass' which seldom blooms. As a medium-leaved Superba cane, it makes a lovely large hanging basket or specimen. It also has one other great trait, unlike most silver leaved canes, it's not mildew prone. It was named a few years ago, but was in such demand that we never had enough to list. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

$11.95

This is a reintroduction of an old offering. Begonia 'Amaterasu' is a very easy to grow magnificent hybrid from Japan with red-backed, dark coppery leaves and clusters of brilliant orange flowers. Absolutely fabulous when in bloom and the parent or ancestor of many bronze-leaved orange-flowered begonias. A very important begonia in the history of canes, as many bronze-leaved or red or orange flowers would not exist if Joukichi Kawanami had not created it. Compact, upright growth habit. A great specimen to have. (Kawanami)

Begonia 'Aunt Edith'

Begonia Aunt Edith

$11.95

NEW! - Begonia 'Aunt Edith' is both new and old. While it was named nearly 30 years ago, it was soon lost. This plant is a new recreation. Not exactly the original, but it's the same cross and chosen because it looks like the original. It can become quite large, but can be kept smaller with training. Leaves are medium sized and lobed with some dentation to the edge. Leaves start out bronze and mature to green but are so heavily spotted with silver that the underlying color is barely noticeable. Flowers are a lovely shade of clear pink. It makes a fine basket or upright specimen in a pot. Very showy in or out of bloom. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia 'Bad Kitty'

Begonia Bad Kitty

$11.95

NEW! - As quoted from the breeder, Brad Thompson: "Begonia 'Bad Kitty' gets her name from the fact that initially her coloring reminded me of a tabby cat, but then as the year progresses the leaves get much redder with bright glowing eyes. Besides that, she's a little bit unruly. Someone asked me why I would name a begonia that grew so wild? I said it would be a little boring if we only named and grew the begonias that made small round perfect show plants. Most of the year 'Bad Kitty' is in its red form and the rhizomes are large and growing a little crazy. The leaves are star shaped, medium-sized, and hairy. They also grow on long petioles that are covered with white contrasting hair. She is also a very profuse bloomer in the spring with flowers on long stalks. 'Bad Kitty' just does what she wants. She makes an interesting hanging basket and you can't complain about how easy she is to grow or the intense red color. Everyone needs a begonia that's a little wild and a challenge. 'Bad Kitty' lives up to her name, as she is a cat after all." New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

90316

Begonia 'Barbara Rose'

Begonia Barbara Rose

$10.95

Grows very full easily and can be trained to be very compact. Flowers are a lovely shade of bright rose pink flowers in hydrangea type clusters above the foliage. Begonia 'Brad Thompson'

Begonia Brad Thompson

$13.95

NEW! - This is a medium to large leaved rhizomatous begonia. Leaves are roughly star shaped with prominent eyes and veins with sparse long white hairs. The fabulous stages of coloring don't seem to change with growing conditions. It stays full and compact and is easy to grow. Yes, Brad Thompson did name a begonia after himself. He got tired of waiting for someone else to do it and wanted to enjoy it in his lifetime. Begonia 'Carol Knight' may vary from its tawny brown color, especially in good light where its new leaves are red that gradually fade to an unusual aqua marine green. In all its color changes it maintains its most prominent features which are its prominent red veins, glowing center, and a waxy layer to mature leaves. The waxy layer makes taking photos that do it justice much harder. Leaves are also sparsely hairy with a serrated hairy edge. Hot pink flowers in spring. Very full growing, vigorous and easy to grow. Begonia coccinea

Begonia coccinea

$8.95

This begonia has been circulated under this name for many years, although it doesn't really seem like a cane or match the original description, or accounts by the first growers. This is a sprawling, nearly trailing plant with thick and waxy pale green, slightly cupped smooth edged leaves with a nearly constant supply of dangling bright red flowers. Not always easy to grow but worth the effort. It does not seem to do well with cold or overwatering, so it is easier to keep if grown indoors, in a greenhouse, or given some protection from cold weather. Make sure to let it dry out before watering. Makes a nice hanging basket and is a novel species to collect. Please be advised that it is not like other canes, nor will it grow 5 to 10 feet tall like Begonia 'Pink coccinea'.

90615

Begonia 'Copper King'

Begonia Copper King

$11.95

NEW! - Small rhizomatous begonia. The name is a bit of a misnomer in that it really should be Copper Kid or something with a small name, but just didn't seem to fit. The picture doesn't do justice to the strong overall copper color of the leaf. Younger leaves have somewhat shallow lobes but mature leaves are more star shaped. The copper coloring is most vivid in the center and along the central veins and along the sparsely hairy edge. A smaller begonia but still vigorous and easy to grow with plenty of white to light pink flowers in spring. A good candidate for a windowsill, small basket, or just as a potted plant. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia 'Dangling Pearls'

Begonia Dangling Pearls

$11.95

NEW! - While this begonia is nearly the first begonia named by Brad Thompson, it hasn't been previously listed online. It's unique because there are few small growing white canes with nearly black leaves and white flowers. It is also one of the few white flowered canes which doesn't seem to turn pink when given stronger light. Stays small and compact with very little effort and makes a nice hanging basket that is nearly everblooming. Because of its dark leaves, it makes a splendid contrast when grown alongside pink and red flowered canes. Original plant has been going strong since the early 90's, so it should be a success for most begonia fanciers. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

90109

Begonia 'Deco Checks'

Begonia Deco Checks

$10.95

Medium sized dark green leaves with dark black checkering and white center eye. Coloring stays fairly consistent all year regardless of light conditions. Though small, it is easy to grow and quickly fills the pot with narrow rhizomes. This multi-purpose begonia is very versatile and fast growing. This is great begonia to have, especially if you want smaller growing ones. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

$10.95

Begonia 'Golden Swallowtail'

Begonia Golden Swallowtail

$9.95

We don't know how "new" this begonia is but it's new to Kartuz Greenhouses. We really like it. The leaves are a bright yellow/green with a faint brown stitching along the edge. Leaves have overlapping lazy spirals but you can barely tell anyway since the leaf folds and cups, and the plant grows so full, it's hard to tell where one leaf ends and other starts. Leaves are irregularly lobed, sometimes shallow and sometimes to a cleft. Very crisp and clean in appearance with a satin sheen that only adds to the golden affect. Lots of pink flower spikes in late winter. Everyone loves this begonia not only for it's looks, but also for it's ease of growth. Although it isn't listed in the International Database for Begonias, we are fairly sure that it's a Tim Anderson hybrid.

90610

Begonia 'Green Wings'

Begonia Green Wings

$11.95

NEW! - Begonia 'Green Wings' is a small easy to grow cane with dark olive green leaves. Leaves are a uniform color without spots and with a waxy shine and red undersides. Blooms profusely, especially during the warm months of the year. We haven't seen one with mildew so probably it is fairly resistant. Can be used in many ways but especially makes a nice small hanging basket. It's not a new release but hasn't been widely circulated. Compact and easy to grow. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

90497

Begonia 'Halloween Treat'

Begonia Halloween Treat

$11.95

Was formally named 'Halloween' but we found there was already a B. 'Halloween' so it was changed. If you already have our plant named B. 'Halloween', please change it to 'Halloween Treat'. This is a small to medium leaved rhizomatous begonia. Leaves are lobed roughly star shaped, serrated and lobed with sparse hair on surface and edges. Under our light conditions (bright filtered light), B. 'Halloween Treat' spends most of the year in various shades of pumpkin from dark orange to tawny brown with some darker markings and a prominent central 'eye'. Near Halloween the leaves turn completely black with red glowing 'eyes' and veins. That's pretty much where its name originated. It stays small and compact but is easy to grow and full growing. Very odd shade of profuse hot pink flowers in spring. A great plant to aquire. (Thompson)

90602

Begonia 'Hotspot'

Begonia Hotspot

$11.95

NEW! - This is like the unruly monster version of Michael Kartuz's Begonia 'Vivaldi'. While it shares the same coloring as 'Vivaldi' and they look alike as children, that is were the similarity ends. Begonia 'Hotspot' does not stay small, the leaves grow to a medium size and probably will get even larger in the best growing conditions. The leaves have a slightly lobed and dentated edge and are a bright shade of green with hot red spots from which it get its name. Profuse bloomer in spring with a shower of pink flowers. If it has one bad trait, it's that you have to work a little to keep it in bounds. Easy and grows quickly. Another great plant for begonia enthusiasts, especially for new growers that want a fancy begonia that they can easily grow. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

69276

Begonia 'In Stitches'

$10.95

Low to medium growing rhizomatous. Leaves are medium sized with medium green star-shaped leaves with black stitching and hairs along the margin. Leaves are on long hairy petioles. 90498

Begonia 'Indian Summer'

Begonia Indian Summer

$11.95

Medium leaved rhizomatous. It's very hard to get a perfect image since the velvety sheen to the leaf is hard to capture. Roughly a rounded star shaped leaf, lobed and slightly cupped with a glowing hairy serrated edge. The leaves can go through color changes during the year from reddish brown to orange/red with faint darker markings but always with a central glowing eye and glowing red central veins. In Autumn B. 'Indian Summer' is nearly always the color in the picture and no matter what shade it always has that velvety sheen. The leaves do practically glow. It has the added bonus of profuse medium pink flowers in spring. Compact and easy to grow. A must have. (Thompson)

90284

Begonia jairii

Begonia jairii

$8.95

Probably can be grown to be large but is easily maintained and kept to a small size. Considered by some to be a form of Begonia ulmifolia though its growth habits are much different. Medium green leaves are small and narrow with a rounded tip and hairy. In certain light conditions the hairs give the plant a pinkish/purple hue. Stems have an arching habit which give it a weeping appearance. Would probably make a great hanging basket. White flowers in spring but quite attractive even out of bloom. Although it has been in cultivation for a long period is not widely known or grown and this is probably the first time it has been available online. A must have for collectors of hairy leaves and species begonias.

90603

Begonia 'Jim Jaeger'

Begonia Jim Jaeger

$11.95

NEW! - This recently released begonia has roughly star-shaped medium-sized leaves that are multicolored, although muted in tone. The green leaves are dominated by dark brown markings, either solid or patterned, which cover nearly all the spaces between the leaf veins . Each leaf generally has a silvery streak along the end of each main vein that has a strong lavender tint. While the coloring is understated, it is striking and distinctive. The leaves are sparsely covered with hairs. There aren't many begonias with lavender streaks that are easy to grow, faultless, and that make a perfectly shaped full plant. The coloring changes very little with growing condition or the seasons. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

$11.95

NEW! - This is a tall growing cane with medium sized superba type leaves that are bronze and streaked with silver. It blooms with long dangling clusters of fragrant bright pink flowers. The first thing that can be said about this begonia is that it's a survivor. Planted outdoors where other begonias would have perished, it has survived downpours, heat, drought and neglect and still continues to flourish. Wendy Corby, begonia enthusiast and newsletter editor of the Sacramento Begonia Society, liked the idea of a survivor named after her, so last year it was given the name Begonia 'Lady Corby' by its breeder Brad Thompson. It's easy to grow and is useful for various purposes, such as for making an impressive large basket plant. This cane has never been sold before. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia valida

Begonia valida

$8.95

Large growing large leaved thick-stemmed begonia. For those unfamiliar with the term, thick-stemmed begonias are basically shrubs with very large diameter stems. Most have a tendency to have leaves mainly at the tops with the bare stems showing but Begonia valida can be trained to be shorter and full or tall and bare depending on your preference. Leaves are almost round with slight lobes. In good light light leaves are dark green with some texture but are large and flat in low light. Blooms in late spring to early summer with profuse upright clusters of white flowers. Has the unique habit of putting out variegated leaves at various times of the year, most often in summer or during blooming period. The variegated leaves eventually turn green though hybrids of Begonia valida often retain variegation such as Begonia 'Gideon'. A great plant for collectors or for growers that like large plants. Very easy to grow. Rarely offered.

Begonia 'Very Verde'

Begonia Very Verde

$11.95

NEW! - The leaves of this begonia are of ordinary shape and average size, but what stands out about them is the color. No matter what light you grow it in, it's going to be the intense bright green color that gives it its name. It looks like someone took a green begonia and then injected it with more green, just to make sure it was green. It is then topped off with chocolate to nearly black markings and edges which frame the green. It makes a nicely shaped plant with a little training and is very easy to grow. This begonia will really brighten up any shady spot. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

(Thompson)

Begonia 'Vista Frills'

Begonia Vista Frills

$11.95

'Vista Frills' is a cross between types so it won't be exactly what you think of as rhizomatous but has more qualities in common with this group. Leaves are small dark roughly heart shaped on short fleshy lazy upright stems with very short internodes. No leaf is exactly alike but they all have a frilly appearance due to irregular spirals, clefts, serration, and folded or undulated surface. They are a bright dark green with light bronze back and a lightened edge which enhances the look. Easy to grow, makes a great basket, like the plant pictured, or a windowsill plant. Tries to grow upright but is so full growing and the stems are so succulent that it eventually bends down. Very cute, a little like a smaller Begonia 'Jagged Edge' though not as cleft or jagged. A great novelty to add to your mix of begonias. An added bonus of profuse pale pink flowers in spring. (Thompson)

Begonia 'White Sabers'

Begonia White Sabers

$11.95

NEW! - This begonia is a member of Brad Thompson's "Saber" series of cane begonias ('Coral Sabers', 'Peppermint Sabers', and 'Pink Sabers'). Although named at the same time as its siblings, it was slow to mature at the time and didn't get circulated with the others. Leaves are a lovely dark olive green with deeply serrated edges and light white spots. It's a heavy bloomer with pure white flowers, which seem unaffected by sun scorch. It's growth habit is also different in that does not grow small and compact like the other "Sabers", but loves to shoot straight up to the stars. It's very full growing and easy to grow and can be kept lower growing with some training. Very few people have this "Saber" and it will be new to most of our customers. New Kartuz introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Begonia 'Wild Pony'

Begonia Wild Pony

$11.95

NEW! - This medium to large leaved rhizomatous begonia has been in circulation for at least 40 years. It was originally a seedling just labeled Bokit x carrieae created by Leslie Woodriff but was later named and circulated under the name 'Wild Pony' by Brad Thompson. It is somewhat wild and sprawling and takes a little work to make a nicely shaped plant. But it's a wonderful plant for hybridizing, as it seems to pass on it's vigor, spirals, and coloring, which is green with dark markings along the veins. Easy to grow and a survivor, as its longevity in circulation would imply. New Kartuz introduction for 2017. (Woodriff)

Pilea pubescens 'Silver Cloud'

Silver Cloud Pilea, Silver Panamiga

Pilea pubescens Silver Cloud

$8.95

NEW! - Uncommon house plant with striking silvery leaves, ruffled and serrated, with pinkish color on the undersides. It's an upright compact plant to 10 inches high with inconspicuous flowers. Although it likes terrarium conditions, it might be a bit large for such usage. Ideal in a mixed planting of house plants, such as with silvery or spotted begonias, thus creating a nice contrast. Also, use it in its own hanging basket. Indoors give it bright conditions and humidity and let the soil dry slightly between watering. It does not like waterlogged soil, so do not use too large a pot, smaller is better. Needs part to full shade outdoors in mild climates. Minimum temperature should be 50F, with the ideal range from 65F to 85F. Since cuttings root easily, it's a good idea to periodically replace old plants. Cold air, especially in winter, may cause some leaf drop. Do a bit of judicious pruning in spring to induce new growth. Native to South America. USDA zones 10 - 11. Urticaceae
