Pisonia grandis 'Alba'

(Syn.: Pisonia alba), Moonlight Tree, Lettuce Tree

Pisonia grandis Alba

This small evergreen tree is grown for its foliage. Its canopy of luminous, pale yellow-green leaves creates a stunning effect in a tropical garden against a backdrop of dark foliage. Best color develops in full sun or bright shade. It prefers sandy soil and is resistant to salt spray. However, it cannot take any cold weather. It's strictly a tropical plant, only suitable for southern Florida, the Caribbean, Hawaii or in a warm greenhouse. Grows rapidly to 15 feet. The small inconspicuous flowers seldom appear. In the Pacific, its leaves are eaten like spinach. Native to Indian Ocean, South Pacific islands. USDA zones 11 - 12. Nyctaginaceae

Pisonia umbellifera 'Aurea'

(Syn.: Pisonia brunoniana 'Aurea'), Golden Variegated Bird Catcher Tree

Pisonia umbellifera Aurea

This is a very rare unusual form of the Bird Catcher Tree with beautiful leaves of bright yellow and green variegation. It resembles a compact variegated rubber tree. Small sweetly scented green flowers are followed by sticky seed pods which stick to birds, thus its common name. Makes a nice indoor plant if given bright light, but no direct sunlight. Outdoors give part shade and protect from frost. Native to New Zealand. Nyctaginaceae
