Family: Solanaceae

Iochroma 'Empress' is a new interspecies hybrid between Iochroma australe 'Alba' and Iochroma cyaneum. It has the long tubular flowers of I. cyaneum in the rare color of white with a slight flaring bell shape from I. australe. Its slightly fuzzy light pink buds open to long white flowers with wide flaring bells. It differs from our new introduction Iochroma 'White Knight' in that its flowers are always white in all light conditions and the flowers are much larger and have much more flaring bells. Also, it seems to be more upright and larger growing than 'White Knight'. So far, the blooming habit seems to be to put out long stems with a large cluster at the tip followed by smaller weeping side shoots with smaller numerous clusters. Much more trainable than pure I. cyaneum, this type can be trained to be low and spreading or trained up to be a tall specimen. Like most iochromas, it seems to be in some state of bloom all year. Exclusive. (Thompson)
