The largest group of begonias are the rhizomatous, possibly over 700 species, mostly from Central and South America. Most of the rhizomatous begonias from Asia and Africa are classified as distinctive foliage varieties.

Small to medium growing rhizomatous begonia. Normally the leaves are on the small side but in the right conditions could be much larger. This compact plant is covered with leaves in various shades from silver to lavender but generally when seen close up they are silver with red speckles. One of the smallest varieties to have a star shaped leaf, although still larger than a mini begonia. Showy and easy to grow with its magical coloring. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

(Beefsteak Begonia, Kidney Begonia)

Old-fashioned cultivar with dark green, glossy, round, peltate leaves, red underside. This German cross of Begonia hydrocotylifolia and Begonia manicata was made in 1845, making it one of the earliest hybrids in cultivation. It has been passed down by families for generations, which is the reason it has stayed around for such a long time. Easy.

Medium leaved rhizomatous begonia. Bright green leaves with so many nearly red checks that some leaves have almost no green at all. Leaves are a distorted star shape with rounded tips and a sparsely hairy surface and edge with a prominent white eye. Leaves are on short petioles, so it stays very full and compact. The name refers to the checkers game, since it has so many checks that the name just seems to fit. Medium pink flowers with speckles and a lighter pink edge blooming in spring. Very easy to grow and vigorous, a good companion for its sibling Begonia 'Vista Checks'. New introduction for 2017. (Thompson)

Medium to large sized angular-shaped leaves with red hairs on margin. Leaves are a pale gray-green color and have a hairy red collar around the leaf stalk where leaf connects. Pink flowers in spring. Takes a little work to get a shapely plant but worth the effort. Rhizome grows upright. Old hybrid, but rarely offered. Similar to Begonia 'Colonel Gale'.
