Family: Acanthaceae
This 3 foot shrub has dark green elliptic leaves with stems covered with silky hairs. Blooms in warm weather with 2" long bright red lobelia-like flowers that are about 1 inch wide with a large lower lip. It should be planted in full sun, well-drained soil, and seems to tolerate some drought and light frost. A fairly tough plant. Attracts hummingbirds. Peru.
