Polyscias

The Polyscias, also known as Aralia or Panax, are cultivated in tropical areas worldwide for their showy foliage and are used as hedges, screens or in specimen plantings. They are ideal as an accent in containers for a tropical effect and are a colorful addition to the home, a conservatory, or greenhouse. These plants are native to Polynesia and southeast Asia and come in various species and cultivars. They may grow up to 12 feet high in tropical areas, such as Hawaii and southern Florida, and thrive in partial shade to full sun, in heat and humidity with ample moisture. Outdoors in these areas they are very tough and durable, rapidly coming back from neglect with moisture and feeding. Hedges are easily grown from branches planted in the ground and allowed to root. Indoors they need bright light, warmth, and a potting soil with excellent drainage. They cannot tolerate water-logged soil conditions and it is best to grow them somewhat root-bound. They make interesting Bonsai-like plants. Tip prune to shape and encourage branching. Plants are very tropical and will rapidly decline when temperatures drop below 50F. USDA zones 11 - 12.

Rice cactus, Coral Cactus, Mistletoe Cactus

This is an epiphytic (tree-dwelling) cactus with light green cylindrical jointed stems that look like chubby grains of rice. The stems are erect at first, but as they grow longer they become pendant up to 2 feet long. In the spring, tiny greenish-white, often tinged with pink, flowers appear to be followed later by small white berries. It makes a perfect houseplant and hanging basket plant with its numerous small flowers. It thrives best in bright shade with no direct sunlight. It's not a drought-resistant plant, so regular watering is necessary, but let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. Plant it in a slightly acidic, well-drained potting mix. It will not survive a hard frost, so it should be brought indoors or given protection in winter. The tips of the stems often turn reddish with cold weather. It's a native of Uruguay and Brazil.
