Family: Acanthaceae

Uncommon South African shrub with unusual candle-shaped spikes with burnt orange shrimp-like flowers. Flowering occurs during late summer and fall. Evergreen growing to 5 feet high and wide with gray-green leaves. Can tolerate a light frost, is drought resistant, and fast growing. Plant in full sun to part shade. A light pruning in winter will encourage a bushier plant with more flowers, as blooms appear on the ends of branches. Attracts nectar loving birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Probably USDA zones 9 - 10.
